Measure total ring height with 0.01 mm calipers, compare it with the box interior depth, and ask us to verify the fit before you order. HONGYEXGCN publishes a 3 × 3 × 2 in outer case; interior depth is Pending verification, so confirm the fit with us first.

Why a high-set ring needs depth, not just width

2 numbers decide whether a high-set ring fits: total ring height and box interior depth. Finger size and band width cannot tell you whether the lid clears the stone, because a high setting adds height above the band. Three failures follow: the lid presses the stone, the insert lets the ring tip, or prongs catch the lining on lift-out. GIA notes that raised prong edges can catch fabrics, and that cathedral settings raise the center stone higher above the band, which can make the structure more likely to catch on clothing or objects (GIA, viewed 2026-10-25).

5 high-set silhouettes and the box risk each one adds

5 silhouettes cover most high-set rings: prong, cathedral, basket, halo, and tension; each changes which part of the box you measure.

SettingHow the ring sitsBox risk to check
Prong4 or 6 claws hold the stone above the band (Hannoush)Lid clearance above prong tips
CathedralArches raise the stone above the bandThe arch can sit higher than the stone
BasketSupports join the prongs beneath the stone and suit deeper stonesThe insert must not press the basket
HaloSmaller stones ring the center stone; larger halos widen the footprintOutside diameter across the halo
TensionThe stone sits between open band ends and can shift on impactSide-to-side movement; add padding

GIA supplies the setting descriptions and snag risks (viewed 2026-10-25); Hannoush lists "elevated profile can snag" as the cathedral trade-off and recommends 6 prongs above 1.5 ct (published 2026-05-29, viewed 2026-10-25).

How to measure ring height and maximum diameter in 3 steps

3 caliper readings map a ring to a box: total height, maximum outside diameter, and band width. Use digital calipers reading in millimeters; a jeweler's guide notes that many are accurate to 0.01 mm (Modern Gents, published 2025-05-12, viewed 2026-10-25).

Diagram: measure total ring height from the top of the stone to the lowest point of the band

Figure 1: total height H is the dimension that has to clear the box interior depth; width alone does not decide the fit.

  1. Total height. Place the ring on a flat surface and close the jaws from that surface to the highest point of the stone or setting; that reading includes the setting height. Take 3 readings and keep the largest.
  2. Maximum outside diameter. Measure across the widest part of the ring face, including side stones, halo, or cathedral shoulders. That number tells you whether the ring can lie flat in the insert.
  3. Band width and inner diameter. Measure the band width across the face, then the inner diameter. The inside diameter also sets ring size, and BS EN ISO 8653 defines ring-size measurement with a ring stick and a designated size (BSI, viewed 2026-10-25).

Maximum outside diameterWidest part of ring faceSets insert width

Keep readings separate. Ring thickness (band inside to outside) is not total ring height; Modern Gents notes that some jewelers call band thickness depth or height. Do not squeeze soft metal, because the jaws can deform gold.

What interior depth do you need? A 2-part formula

2 numbers set the minimum interior depth: ring total height (H) and clearance (C), so depth = H + C. Clearance covers the lid lining, insert compression, and lid hardware. This guide uses a 3–5 mm working allowance: an assumption for planning, not a measured specification, checked against the actual box. A 10 mm ring needs 13–15 mm; a 12 mm ring needs 15–17 mm. Those examples use your caliper reading plus that allowance.

Outer height is not interior depth. The 2 in (50.8 mm) outer height of our case includes the base, lid shell, lining, and the in-lid light, so usable depth is smaller. Only a caliper measurement inside the open box confirms it; that number is Pending verification.

Figure 2: the published exterior size is not the usable interior space; ask for the interior depth with the insert in place.

The 3 × 3 × 2 in case: published facts and pending numbers

3 × 3 × 2 in (about 76 × 76 × 51 mm) is the outer size published on both HONGYEXGCN listings, not interior space. Keep known and unknown numbers apart when comparing with your readings.

  • Outer size: 3 × 3 × 2 in, about 76 × 76 × 51 mm (Amazon listings, viewed 2026-10-25).
  • Interior length, width, and depth: Pending verification; a supplier caliper measurement of an open box is needed.
  • Insert type: Pending verification; a molded single-ring slot and a flat pillow hold 2 rings differently.
  • In-lid light and velvet lining: listing claim, viewed 2026-10-25; depth lost to that hardware is unknown.
  • Ratings: 4.6 / 5 from 144 ratings for the octagonal LED box, and 4.6 / 5 from 30 ratings for the velvet arch box (Amazon, viewed 2026-10-25).

One buyer review gives a width data point that matters for a high-set ring:

"My fiance loves this box, it really made the ring I bought shine way better then the box it came with. The light is very bright and it is wide enough to hold two rings side by side." — Steve B, Amazon customer review of the White box, reviewed August 24, 2026, ASIN B0FBGF6P6L (viewed 2026-10-25)

That review supports width for 2 rings, not interior depth for a single high-set ring, which stays Pending verification.

A 60-second fit test before you commit

3 checks catch a bad fit before the lid closes; run them on a table, not in your hand, and repeat twice.

  1. Seat the ring. It should sit without rocking; if it tips forward, the insert is too deep or too wide for the band.
  2. Close slowly. Watch the gap at the front of the lid; contact at any point means usable depth is below your H + C figure.
  3. Lift and shake gently. If the lining catches a prong, or the ring stays in the lid, the insert and lining are wrong for the ring.

The listing describes a soft-closing hinge; whether that hinge keeps the lid closed in a coat pocket is Pending verification on the actual sample.

Which HONGYEXGCN ring box should you check first?

2 HONGYEXGCN listings publish the same 3 × 3 × 2 in outer size, so the choice comes down to finish, color, and the insert you need to confirm.

Send your 3 caliper readings and we will tell you whether the measured interior clears them before you order: request a fit check. If the box will hold 2 rings, read the two-band sizing guide; if you still need her size, use the ring-size guide; browse both in the shop.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure a high set engagement ring for a ring box?

Set the ring on a flat surface and use 0.01 mm calipers to measure from that surface to the highest point of the stone or setting. Then measure the widest part of the ring face and the band width. Compare the height with measured interior depth, not outer height, and keep the largest of 3 readings.

Does a 3 × 3 × 2 inch ring box fit a high set engagement ring?

A 3 × 3 × 2 in box measures about 76 × 76 × 51 mm outside, and that outer height is not usable depth. Whether a high-set ring fits depends on interior depth against total ring height plus clearance. On HONGYEXGCN boxes that depth is Pending verification, so ask us to verify the fit before ordering.

What is the difference between ring height and band thickness?

Band thickness runs from the band's inside surface to its outside surface, and some jewelers call that dimension depth or height. Total ring height runs from the bottom of the shank to the highest point of the stone or setting. Box clearance depends on total ring height; band thickness only affects how the ring sits in the insert.

What happens if the ring box lid touches the diamond?

Pressure from the lid can rub the stone, press the prong tips, and lift the ring out of the insert. GIA recommends periodic prong inspection because prongs wear and can catch, and extra pressure from a tight lid adds risk. Treat any contact as a failed fit and choose a deeper box or a different insert.
