One borrowed ring, a caliper that reads to 0.1 mm, and one jeweler check put you within 1 US size; the chart below converts that number to EU and UK sizes in 10 seconds. Measure twice, then contact us with the size before you order a ring box.
1 US size step is 0.81 mm, so aim within 1 size
Every US ring size is 0.81 mm wider in inside diameter and 2.55 mm longer in inside circumference than the size below it, so a 0.4 mm measurement error is already half a size (Wikipedia ring-size table, checked 2026-10-25). That is why every method on this page aims at a ±1 size window rather than an exact number, and why the last step is a jeweler's measurement of the ring you finally buy.
Public charts round to different decimals. 123GOLD lists US size 6 at 16.6 mm inside diameter, while the US formula gives 16.5 mm (123GOLD, checked 2026-10-25). Some charts build comfort-fit sizing into the conversion, and the same US size can land 1 EU size apart between two charts (Larson Jewelers, checked 2026-10-25).
2 Borrow one ring and read its inside diameter in 4 steps
4 steps and a caliper give the smallest error of the five methods, and Helzberg gives a borrowed ring as its own answer to how to get someone's size without asking (Helzberg, checked 2026-10-25).
Figure: measure the inside diameter across the widest point, then convert with C = pi × d and US = (d − 11.63) ÷ 0.8128.
- Pick the ring she wears on the same hand and finger that the new ring is for. A ring from another finger is a starting point only.
- Measure the inside across the widest point, not the outside across the band. Digital calipers that read to 0.01 mm are enough (Modern Gents, checked 2026-10-25); a steel ruler with 0.5 mm marks also works. If the setting blocks the caliper jaws, place the ring on paper, trace the inside of the band with a pencil, and measure the traced circle at its widest point.
- Convert the inside diameter to a size: inside circumference = diameter × 3.1416, and US size = (diameter − 11.63) ÷ 0.8128. A 16.5 mm reading gives 51.8 mm circumference, EU/ISO 52, and US 6.0.
- Measure the same ring twice on different days and keep the larger number. A 0.1 mm caliper error is about 1/8 of a US size, while a 0.5 mm ruler error is about 0.6 size.
3 Print a chart at 100% and match the ring in 2 minutes
2 minutes is enough when you print a paper ring-size chart at actual size, check the printed scale with a ruler, and drop the borrowed ring onto the circles (Helzberg printable chart, checked 2026-10-25). The reading is limited by the chart's steps: if the chart marks half sizes, that step is 0.4 mm of inside diameter, so a ring that sits between two circles can be read 0.2 mm off, about a quarter size. A printer set to "fit to page" can shrink the chart by more than that, which is why the scale check comes before the ring.
4 Wrap a paper strip around her finger: 5 steps and ±1 mm
5 steps get a circumference reading that is usually within 1 mm, which is about 0.4 US size, but only if the paper does not stretch and her finger stays still.
- Cut a 6 mm wide strip of plain paper, not string, and keep tape away from the part that touches her skin.
- Wrap it around the base of the target finger, snug but not tight, and mark where the strip overlaps.
- Lay the strip flat and measure mark to mark in millimeters. That number is her finger's inside circumference.
- Divide the circumference by 3.1416 to get the inside diameter, or match the circumference to the EU/ISO column in the table below.
- Repeat 3 times and keep the median. One millimeter of circumference is about 0.4 US size, so the median is more informative than a single reading.
Helzberg's fit rule matters more than the number: the ring should stay on when she shakes her hand but pass over her knuckle, and band width and stacking rings change the size you need (Helzberg, checked 2026-10-25). This method also needs her hand still, which is why it comes after the borrowed-ring method.
5 Use string only as a cross-check in 3 steps
3 steps with string confirm or reject a paper-strip reading, because string stretches and can add 1–2 mm to the circumference.
- Wrap the string once, mark the overlap, and measure it flat with the same ruler.
- Repeat 3 times; if the readings spread by more than 2 mm, the string is stretching.
- Compare with the paper strip: a 2 mm circumference error is about 0.8 US size, so a string result should move your target by less than 1 size and never decide it.
6 Scale a photo against a ruler in 4 steps
4 steps turn a phone photo into an inside-diameter reading when you cannot borrow the ring, using a millimeter ruler as the scale in the same frame.
- Place the ring flat on white paper and lay a millimeter ruler beside it, both fully visible.
- Shoot from directly above at arm's length, with the phone parallel to the paper and the flash off.
- Measure the ring's inside diameter and a 10 mm span on the ruler in pixels in the same photo.
- Calculate inside diameter = (ring pixels ÷ ruler-span pixels) × 10 mm, then convert with the formula above.
A 1–2 mm diameter error becomes 1.2–2.5 US sizes, so treat the result as the starting size for a jeweler's check. Photo scaling on HONGYEXGCN boxes is Pending verification, because we have not tested it against caliper readings.
7 When 1 jeweler visit beats all 5 home methods
1 store visit removes the 2 errors that home methods cannot see: band width and knuckle clearance. Helzberg says its experts measure fingers daily and calls an in-store sizing the way to get the correct size (Helzberg, checked 2026-10-25).
Go to a jeweler when:
- the ring you are buying has a band wider than the ring you measured, or she wears stacking rings;
- her knuckle is visibly wider than the base of her finger;
- the only ring you could borrow came from a different finger or the other hand;
- the setting or material may not be resizable: most rings can be resized, and the method depends on the material and complexity (Wikipedia, checked 2026-10-25);
- the ring is already ordered and cannot be exchanged.
Larson Jewelers warns that ring size can change from jeweler to jeweler, so check even a chart-matched reading against the maker's own chart (Larson, checked 2026-10-25).
8 The conversion table: 9 US sizes against UK, EU and inside diameter
0.81 mm separates 1 US size, and the 9 rows below cover US 4 to 12, which brackets the 2 averages Helzberg reports: US 7 for women's rings and US 10 for men's rings (Helzberg, checked 2026-10-25).
| US size | UK/AU size | EU/ISO size (inside circumference, mm) | Inside diameter (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | H | 47 | 14.9 |
| 5 | J½ | 49 | 15.7 |
| 6 | L½ | 52 | 16.5 |
| 7 | N½ | 54 | 17.3 |
| 8 | P½ | 57 | 18.1 |
| 9 | R½ | 59 | 18.9 |
| 10 | T½ | 62 | 19.8 |
| 11 | V½ | 65 | 20.6 |
| 12 | X½ | 67 | 21.4 |
- Inside circumference = inside diameter × 3.1416. EU/ISO size is the inside circumference in millimeters rounded to the nearest millimeter, which is how ISO 8653:2016 defines ring size (Wikipedia, checked 2026-10-25).
- UK letters are the alphabetical scale with half-size steps, and half letters are real sizes in that system (Larson Jewelers, checked 2026-10-25).
- Charts disagree by up to 1 EU size and half a UK letter. 123GOLD lists US 7 at 17.5 mm and EU 55, while the formula here gives 17.3 mm and EU 54 (123GOLD, checked 2026-10-25). Use one chart consistently and confirm with the maker.
9 Which 3 × 3 × 2 in ring box fits the size you measured?
3 × 3 × 2 in (about 76 × 76 × 51 mm) is the outside size published on both HONGYEXGCN LED ring boxes, and it is the only fit number we can confirm today; interior width, interior depth and insert type are Pending verification.
The inside diameter you measured (14.9–21.4 mm in the table) is far smaller than the 76 mm outside footprint of either box, so width is not the limiting number. Depth is: a high-set stone adds height above the band, and the lid carries an LED and lining. Read how to measure a high-set ring for a box before you assume the lid closes.
One Amazon review gives a width data point for two rings in one box:
"wide enough to hold two rings side by side" — Steve B, Amazon customer review of the White box, reviewed August 24, 2026, ASIN B0FBGF6P6L (checked 2026-10-25)
- LED Octagonal Ring Box. White, Red and Black; 4.6/5 from 144 Amazon ratings; reference prices US$15.98 for White and Black and US$17.89 for Red on the Amazon listing (checked 2026-10-25). The listing states an LED in the lid that lights when the box opens, and a soft-close hinge. See the LED octagonal ring box page.
- LED Velvet Arch Ring Box. Red; 4.6/5 from 30 Amazon ratings; reference price US$17.98, and availability is still being confirmed (Amazon catalog, checked 2026-10-25). See the LED velvet arch ring box page.
Send the inside diameter and the ring's total height through the contact page; if the interior measurement is still Pending, we say so instead of guessing. You can also check availability on Amazon. If the ring will travel after the proposal, the jewelry travel packing guide covers the box in a carry-on.
10 3 mistakes that add about 1 full size
3 mistakes each cost about 1 US size, and none of them is a measurement problem.
- Printing the chart at "fit to page". The printed circles shrink, and the ring falls on a smaller circle than it should. Print at 100%, then check the scale with a ruler.
- Reading the outside of the ring. The outside includes 2 band thicknesses. Measure the inside across the widest point, or subtract 2 × band width if the inside is blocked by the setting.
- Measuring a ring from another finger or hand. Same-hand, same-finger rings read closest; a ring from another finger can be half a size off before you start (Helzberg, checked 2026-10-25).
When a reading lands between two sizes, keep both candidates and decide with a jeweler or with the fit rule in section 4 rather than rounding to the size you expected.
Frequently asked questions
How can I measure my girlfriend's ring size without asking her?
Borrow one ring she wears on the target finger, measure its inside diameter with calipers or a ruler, and convert it with the formulas in this guide. Helzberg suggests the same route and adds that a close friend or family member may already know the size (checked 2026-10-25). Expect a ±1 US size window, then confirm the result with a jeweler before the ring is finished.
How accurate is a paper strip when measuring a finger at home?
A paper strip measures inside circumference, and 1 mm of circumference is about 0.4 US size (Wikipedia table). Deformation, stretch and a moving finger can add another 1–2 mm, so a home reading should be treated as ±1 size. Take 3 readings and keep the median rather than the first number.
What should I do if the only ring I can borrow fits her other hand?
Use it as a rough starting size only. A ring from a different finger or the other hand can sit half a size off the target finger, and the error grows with band width. Compare it with a paper-strip reading and have a jeweler measure the borrowed ring against the maker's chart before the ring is ordered.
Can a jeweler resize an engagement ring if the secret size is wrong?
Often yes, but it depends on the material and setting: Wikipedia notes that most rings can be resized, with methods that vary by material and complexity (checked 2026-10-25). Wide bands, full-eternity settings and some alternative metals limit resizing, so ask the maker before ordering. Amazon lists a 30-day return window on the HONGYEXGCN listings.
Does a US 6 ring fit in a 3 × 3 × 2 inch ring box?
A US 6 ring has a 16.5 mm inside diameter, which is far smaller than the 76 mm outside width of the 3 × 3 × 2 in box, so width is not the problem. Interior depth and insert height are Pending verification, and a high-set stone needs more depth. Send the total ring height through the contact page for a fit check.
