Plan on 15-32 characters per line

The engravers we checked publish limits from 16 characters including spaces to about 32, with 20-30 common (checked 2026-10-25). Plan inside 15-32 and split long text into 2 lines.

Block type fits small areas

Block capitals fit more characters than script and stay readable small, while script letters can run together (font guidance, checked 2026-10-25). A workable floor is 8 pt on metal and wood and 10 pt for serif; ask which fonts are in house.

The 1.5 mm minimum text height

Fiber laser guidance sets a minimum text height of 1.5 mm and a line thickness of 0.2 mm (checked 2026-10-25). A high-street job should stay at or above 1.5 mm and 2-3 lines.

Test the same material and finish

Depth and contrast come from the material: velvet is heat-sensitive and should be tested on scrap before a final run (velvet guidance, checked 2026-10-25).

• Lid exterior. Visible in photos and large enough for a name or date; confirm the flat area and centre point first.
• Inside lid. Private, seen only when the box opens; the inside face is often smaller, so ask for its size first.
• Insert or plaque. A velvet lining is heat-sensitive under a laser; a thin metal or wood plaque in the lid or under the insert carries the text without touching the pile.

Ask for the engraveable area in millimetres before you pick a line.

6 questions decide the result

6 questions have to be answered before production, in the same email as the artwork (checked 2026-10-25). Local options are a jeweller with an engraver, a laser engraving shop, or a supplier sample run for a bulk order.

1. Which font file? Ask for the font name and a vector file with text outlined, so a missing font cannot be substituted (checked 2026-10-25).
2. How deep, and through which finish? Ask for a depth in millimetres and whether it cuts through a coating or plated layer.
3. Which surface? Lid exterior, inside lid or plaque; confirm the exact area and centre point.
4. Can you test on the same material? A scrap test is standard for heat-sensitive surfaces (velvet guidance, checked 2026-10-25).
5. What is the turnaround after proof approval? Get the date in writing before paying.
6. What is the rework policy? Engravers engrave exactly what is supplied; one sells personalised pieces as non-returnable, another fixes its own errors (engraver terms, checked 2026-10-25).

6 checks before approving the proof

6 checks catch most mistakes, and they take about 5 minutes on the proof (sources checked 2026-10-25).

1. Spelling and punctuation. Read the line backwards.
2. Repeated characters. Doubled letters such as "ll" or "ee" can merge in script; see them on the proof (font guidance, checked 2026-10-25).
3. Case. Lowercase, UPPERCASE or Title Case is set exactly as submitted (engraver guide, checked 2026-10-25).
4. Numbers and dates. Spell the month when 09.14 and 14.09 could be confused.
5. Line breaks and alignment. Check centring, line gap and margin from the lid edge.
6. Symbols and languages. Confirm every glyph: one service accepts no special characters or emojis (sources checked 2026-10-25).

Approve the proof in writing only after all 6 pass; it is the last checkpoint before the laser runs.

2 HONGYEXGCN listings do not list engraving

The 2 HONGYEXGCN ring box listings carry no engraving option in the Amazon attributes: engraving is marked false for both ASINs (Amazon catalog capture, checked 2026-10-25), and the seller has not confirmed a custom engraving service, so capability stays Pending verification.

Does engraving the inside of a velvet lining work at all?

Velvet can be laser engraved, but it is heat-sensitive: low power, high speed, and a scrap test first. Heat can scorch or flatten the pile, so a metal or wood plaque inside the lid is safer. Ask to see the test on the same velvet.

What happens if the engraver makes a spelling mistake?

It depends on the engraver's terms. One states that pieces are engraved exactly as supplied and are non-returnable, while another fixes errors that are its own. Get the policy in writing and approve the proof yourself.
